Burt came to visit us this weekend, and we sure did show him the sights!
Saturday was glow-in-the-dark mini golf with the law people, boys vs. girls. (Boys won.)
Yesterday was the fun-packed day downtown, with a visit to the University of Chicago campus area. Carrie and Faron met up with us for some good times, South Side style!
Our first stop was the Oriental Institute, a nifty little museum of ancient artifacts that none of us had visited for a long time. (The only time I have ever been there was when I was in 6th grade.)
I think the most interesting pieces in that collection are also the largest - take this Khorsabad bull for example - the star of the Oriental Institute - at 16 feet high and 40 tons.
After the museum, we walked over to the grounds of the old Columbian Exposition of 1893. Most of the landscape is much changed since then, but some relics remain. The Museum of Science and Industry, for instance:
And the Wooded Island, which unfortunately seems to be home to more gang activity than charmed fairgoers these days.
I was glad to visit these relics, though, after reading about the fair in The Devil in the White City and other history books. You can't recreate the old glory of Chicago, but you can walk among the ruins and try to catch a glimpse. (And I'd catch a glimpse during daylight hours in a large group, if you catch my drift.)
