Western road trip, day 11: road to Omaha

Today we drove from Rapid City, SD to Omaha, NE. We left pretty early in the morning so Dave could make a work call when we arrived in the decent cell phone coverage of Sioux Falls; it was about 7.5 hours of driving, plus a couple of pit stops.

The first stop was at a rest stop in Chamberlain, SD to visit the Dignity statue; she's a huge Native American sculpture to signify the resilience of native cultures. She has been there since 2016 and is making the rounds in some memes of Native American pride.

The sculpture is metal, giving it a modern feel, with many colored panels that let light shine through. I thought she was lovely.

I was disappointed that we couldn't visit reservations on this trip; in normal times you can take cultural and food tours of reservations and pump some money into their local economy, while also learning something. These days, the reservations have been hit hard by COVID, so everything is closed and they are asking visitors to stay away. Another time perhaps.

We had a delicious lunch at Jacky's in Sioux Falls, a Guatemalan spot. We took the food to go from the 8th Street location and ate it in the local Falls Park. Dave had a successful work meeting and we felt like real road warriors.

We continued to drive down to Omaha, arriving a little after 4 p.m. - early enough to make reservations at local favorite M's Pub, recommended by my friend and Omaha-pusher Asten.

After dinner, we walked around downtown a bit, getting ice cream at Ted and Wally's (I picked "George Washington Carver," a quadruple peanut butter flavor; Dave got "Coffee and Baklava"), a beer flight at Brickway Brewery and Distillery, and some candy and knick knack shopping at Fairmont Mercantile (the taffy was tempting).

We needed some steps after all that sitting today (and all that ice cream), so we walked around a little lake trail and around the downtown. Lots of huge geese to battle around the lake. The downtown area is cute with lots of brick-lined streets, nifty gift shops, and repurposed old warehouse buildings. I would have liked a little more street art.

Tomorrow we're going to work from the hotel, go to the botanic garden, hit some more breweries, and try to find some tasty restaurants.
