Pattern for Leapfrog Shell Scarf

As you may guess, I have been crocheting a lot this summer, and this is one of the projects I made in the end of May. I'm posting the pattern online because of all the patterns I have invented, I like this one the best.

It's a typical shell pattern, worked in triple stitches, but you never cut your yarn strand. Each row leapfrogs over the other one, giving you nothing to weave in at the end. Hence the name:

Leapfrog Shell Scarf

Use two similar-weight yarns: A & B

With A, ch 28 (Pattern may also be worked in multiple of 8 + 4)

Row 1
: 3 tr in 4th ch from hook (half-shell made, with turning ch counting as 1 tr); * sk 3 chs, 1 sc in next ch, sk 3 chs, 7 tr in next ch (shell made); rep from * across; 4 tr in last ch; ch 1. (Remove hook from loop and insert marker to prevent loop from coming undone.)

Row 2
: In top st of beg half-shell, join B with sc. * Sk 3 sts, 7 tr in sc, sk 3 sts, sc in 4th tr st of shell; rep from * across; sk 3 sts, 7 tr in sc, sk 3 sts, sc in last tr st; ch 4, turn. (Remove hook as with end of Row 1.)

Row 3
: With A, sc in sc just made with B, ch 3; 3 tr in sc just made with B; * sk 3 sts, sc in 4th tr st of shell, sk 3 sts, 7 tr in sc; rep from * across; sk 3 sts, sc in 4th tr st of shell, sk 3 sts, 4 tr in last sc; ch 1. (Remove hook as with end of Row 1.)

Repeat Rows 2-3 until scarf is desired length, and at the end of each row, remove hook as with Row 1 and insert into opposite color.

(If there are problems with the pattern, please let me know via comments on Blogspot or Ravelry.)

Very Pretty. Thanks for sharing your talent with us with your free pattern. That is very generous of you. I would like to also try and make an afghan with this stich. I just love it.

What size crochet hook and yarn did you use for the scarf in the photo?

H hook. The pink yarn is Lion Brand Pound of Love purchased at JoAnn Fabrics. The red yarn is Darlaine Woolblend 4-ply, purchased at a garage sale.

Thanks so much! I saw the yellow/gray one with the button. Is the button functional or is it sewn down?

I didn't do that one, you'd have to ask the maker!

When you chain 4, how do you incorporate it in the next row?

Hi Deb! When you reinsert your hook into the chain 4, join to top stitch of beginning half shell with a single crochet. Row 2 should be the same every time, with color B.
