Blue is back!

DEMS WIN!!!!!

I have been following the election coverage nonstop, and having difficulty concentrating on school work. Here are some of the many reasons why I'm happy today:

1) South Dakota voted against its proposed abortion ban! This ban would have completely undermined the principles of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, namely that the state cannot impose undue burdens on a woman seeking an abortion in the first trimester, and that abortion bans after fetal viability must provide exceptions for the life and health of the mother. Bravo, South Dakota!

2) Judy Baar Topinka is not my new governor! Sure, Hot Rod is still around, but here's hoping he doesn't become the second IL governor indicted in so many years.

3) The Dems took back Congress! At this point, they definitely have the House, and the Senate is close. As Dave pointed out, it's so close that it doesn't even matter who has nominal control of the Senate anymore - it's on even footing now, and with only one third of the Senate seats up for grabs, the Democrats took it back.

4) Rick Santorum has been kicked out. His gay-hating politics have finally caught up with him.

Sadly, the Republican incumbent representative from my district was re-elected, but I'm not too upset about that. Mark Kirk is one of the few Republicans in Illinois who was endorsed by Planned Parenthood, so you can bet that his moderate politics helped his appeal quite a bit.

I can appreciate moderate Republicans - it's really the gay-hating, birth-control-confiscating, war-mongering, fetus-loving, border-wall-building moralistic assholes that I hate. (Is that specific enough?)

Anyway, more than a vote for Democrats, this was a vote for a shift toward moderate politics. And staying moderate and inclusive is really where we will be able to get things done in our country. No more cowboys signing gay marriage bans in churches.

That's all for now - but I will finish by saying that I'm more optimistic about the U.S. right now than I have been for six years. Thanks, America.
