A cheesy anniversary

Yesterday Dave and I celebrated three years of marriage (and five years of coupledom) by going to the Melting Pot in Buffalo Grove, a fun fondue restaurant.

To start off our celebrations, we exchanged gifts in the morning, because basically we can't stand to wait for stuff like that. It's like the gift burns a hole in
our pocket.

Dave got me an awesome metal Swatch watch, which is very much my style. I got him a travel book for our 2010 trip to London, and also Lewis Black's new humor book about religion. Poor Dave - he's too busy right now even to read the Black book, but I thought he might have some time this winter.

Then, at the restaurant, Dave reserved a nice table and had them put a rose on it for me. We ordered three courses of fondue - (1) cheese and veggies/bread, (2) cooking meat in broth/wine, and (3) fruit and baked things dipped in chocolate/peanut butter.

I couldn't decide which one I liked best, but I can definitely tell you that we were stuffed beyond all recognition.

Cooking the meat in the coq au vin brew was the most new thing I had done; they gave us raw meat (small pieces of shrimp, steak, chicken, and andouille sausage) and we skewered them and boiled them for 2 minutes each. It is definitely a cooking process I will have to try at home - it was delicious.

It was nice to go all out for our anniversary - three years doesn't seem like a long time, but when I think about having been with Dave for five years overall, I really begin to realize the strong commitment we've made in our lives.

Happy third anniversary, Dave - and thanks for the great memories.

It was a great time, though I'll be recovering for quite a while. But I should thank you, Val - I'll always feel like the lucky one.
